Thank you all for your continued interest in our Worst Manual Contest. We always have a good time reading over your entries and look forward to next year’s contest. As in previous years, the majority of the entries received this year represented obvious translation issues. Some folks have expressed an interest in seeing more examples of poor writing that aren’t due to translation issues, though. We are happy to comply, but that is up to you! Please keep your eyes open for any good examples of poor documentation (that is available to the general public) as potential entries for next year. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

This year we have two winners! Two folks submitted the same documentation, which warranted a closer look. We decided to award each of them the $100 prize, since great minds think alike! Enjoy this year’s top picks and we look forward to more great entries in the coming year.

Winning Entry

Submitted by John Granger of Illinois and Alan Senior of San Diego, California

This is a one-page assembly guide for a HDD Enclosure that was purchased at a popular nationwide computer retailer. It is a basic, but incomprehensible installation guide.

“HDD Assembles Elucidation,” is how the title reads. Not too clear if you ask us!

A few notable excerpts:

“Heading up the upper cover to turn over to rise…”

“Cover up and down to separate then and completely…”

“Is good with the machine plank according to the right method conjunction the hard dish…” --- “Machine plank” and “hard dish?”

Fortunately, the product appears to be pretty easy to install, because we don’t think these instructions would be much help!

Runner-Up #1

Submitted by Lisa deNeui of Morris, Minnesota

These are operating instructions for a new hydraulic jack that her husband received for Christmas. We would think twice about operating this jack without prior knowledge! These instructions are of little help to a first-time user. Make special note of the tiny diagram used to point out the various parts. It is only about two inches tall and one inch wide to illustrate 12 different parts! They would have been better off just using the diagram on the cover!

A few notable excerpts:

“Before operating the jacks. first .insert the notched end of the handle into the release valve. ---The diagram does not show a handle anywhere, and refers to a “release valve lever.”

Insert operating handle in the socker and the ram is steadily raised…” ---The socker?

“Select point of action according to gravitational center place the jack on the hardness ground if necessary.”

Honorable Mention #1

Submitted by Merv Beamish

Merv suggested that the worst on-line help could be found in any product of a very popular producer of illustration and publishing/desktop publishing software. We’ve all used their products! As to not embarrass the very popular software producer, we have not disclosed their name, though we suspect you know which one he’s referring to.

You can view a sample of one of their many confusing help listings (in this case, the letter ‘T”) below for you to enjoy.

Honorable Mention #2

Submitted by Adam Boyle

This is a remote control that accompanied a fog dish (a bowl that generates fog when filled with water). We feel the graphic speaks for itself.

Honorable Mention #3

Submitted by Michael Tomkins

This is an oldie, but goodie. A very similar entry has won in the past, but we included it in the honorable mentions just in case someone missed it the first time around.

The links below are the front and back photos of the packaging for a clone of the once-popular "Rubik's Cube." This looks like a case of poor understanding of the English language and very poor OCR software.

A few notable excerpts:

"2 The wayg of combinatoin on gccond laycr ia ghowed an below"

"5when the pyramid colors of therd layer as4, turn the side to upper"

"the conbinetion of gix gidea"

As Michaels puts it, “These, and other gibberish instructions, are accompanied by perhaps the worst (and of course, most painfully confusing) set of diagrams I have ever seen.” Take a look for yourself!
